2 I. Compréhension écrite TEXT 1 The best about Britain Read the text. Every year, thousands of students visit Britain. "What do you like best about Britain?" Here are some of their answers. Yoko, from Japan "The old people. They're so friendly, and they have always got time to help you. When you don't know where you are, they come up to you and say, 'Can I help you, love?' or 'What are you looking for, dear?'. I love how they call everybody "love" and "dear" like that - also complete strangers." Carlo, from Italy "I like the character of the people. Strangers usually consider that the British are very reserved and distant. But it's not true. I like the way they're always so calm and controlled. When you tell a British person something really dramatic, for example that his house is on fire, he doesn't panic. He just calmly phones 999 and then sits down and has a cup of tea!" Carmen, from Spain "What do I like best about Britain? The fact that people here hardly ever smoke. I never smoke - I think it's disgusting. But my friends in Spain smoke nearly all the time. It's so nice here to have "clean" air in cinemas, on buses, etc. And people who smoke are very polite, they always ask 'Do you mind if I smoke?' " Philippe, from France "I'm staying with an English family. Family life here is more relaxed than in my country. People eat when they like, come in and go out when they want to - there aren't many rules. When I go out in the evening, nobody asks me 'Where are you going? What time are you coming back?' 4 TEXT 2 Teenager survives in jungle on chewing gum! Read the text. Teenager survives in jungle on chewing gum! Do parents and teachers tell you to stop chewing? Well, here s a girl who says chewing gum saved her life! I ve always wanted to go to Australia, says British teenager Louise Saunders. Louise saved her money and spent months planning her trip to Australia with her friend Jo. And the day came when they went on holiday to Australia! But Louise didn t plan to spend three nights alone on a mountain...! While she was in Australia, Louise decided to go for a walk in the rain forest on Mount Tyson, in Queensland. But then she didn t come back. Louise was alone. She called her friend Jo, but her mobile phone cut out. Then she broke her glasses... A team of three helicopters and seventy people looked for Louise, but they didn t see or hear anything. They worked until it was night. The Australian rainforest is a cold, dark and scary place to stay at night, and is home to some of the most poisonous insects, snakes and plants in the world. I slept for ten minutes at a time because it was cold and dangerous. It s a horrible place to be, says Police chief Kim McCoomb. Louise was now very hungry and thirsty. She drank water from leaves of plants and chewed the gum she had in her pocket. Then Louise s boyfriend, Steven Wong, who was looking for her, found a rock. On the rock it said: Louise S loves Steven W forever. It gave us hope, said Steven. But we were running out of time. On the third day, Louise was desperate. She thought, If I don t get out today, I will die. Louise found a stream and followed it. It led her out of the forest and to a working place. She was saved.
