2 Urgences / actions concertées --- Emergencies / Concerted actions --- Emergencias /Acciones concertatad >>> HAITI 12th January strong earthquake in Haiti: An estimated people were killed, were hurt and 1,3 millions became homeless people tried to look for better places in other areas of the country moved to Grande Anse, generating an increase of 28% of the population. Today the situation in Port au Prince is very tense as food distribution has ceased in many places, 7300 persons were thrown out of a football field with nowhere to go to, some other 8000 persons were displaced from a golf field to a new camp 20 km north of PAP (still remain on the spot). The rainy season is starting and people living conditions are therefore deteriorating (people live in deep mud. There are raise of malaria, dengue and respiratory problems. MdM Documents to read: MdM France communication department together with the international network head office prepared a document in English presenting the first months of intervention in Haiti: Doctors of the World in Haiti, earthquake emergency: update march 2010 (sent on request). MdM France communication department wrote a press kit: Haiti 3 months after with a lot of testimonies collected by Florence Priolet (sent on request). A study on financial access to healthcare in Haiti (prior to the earthquake) has been released (executive summary in French and English, whole document in English): Increasing financial access to primary healthcare for the rural poor A study in changes in service use and costs following the removal of users fees in the Grande Anse, Haiti author: Robin Altaras (sent on request). MdM Canada: activity goes on in Cité Soleil in 15 camps and in Choscal Hospital. Hiv prevention, access to counselling, testing and ART, along with primary healthcare, and family planning. MdM France: Activities goes on in 15 camps through temporary clinics in Port au Prince and in Grande Anse (please see all the details in the press kit). MdM Greece just left the Sonapi area (tent camp) in order to stay in a house nearby (for security reasons, to have better stocking and living conditions). They are preparing mobile clinics in camps in Delmas. Petit and Grand Goave: MdM Switzerland + MdM Spain and MdM Belgium work together MdM Suisse works in Petit and Grand Goave: fighting malnutrition, promoting maternal breastfeeding, helping in the hospital for paediatrics. Pascale Giron, directrice de MdM-CH, a effectué une mission de suivi post séisme, en mars L équipe sur place a été entièrement renouvelée, elle est actuellement composée d un coordinateur général, d un coordinateur médical, d un coordinateur nutrition, d un administrateur et d un logisticien. Cette nouvelle équipe dynamique fonctionne parfaitement, dans une très bonne entente générale. La coordination entre les différentes délégations présentes en Haïti et plus particulièrement à Petit Goâve a été discutée. Il a été décidé de signer une convention de partenariat tripartite. Les prochains défis sont liés à la reconstruction ou la réhabilitation des dispensaires détruits ou endommagés et à l appui au service de pédiatrie de l hôpital de Petit-Goâve. Afin d optimiser le suivi de cette mission qui a beaucoup grandi, MdM Suisse a décidé d engager une nouvelle personne au siège à Neuchâtel. Acaba de regresar tras tres semanas de trabajo en Haití, Tomás López Peña, coordinador médico del operativo de MdM España. Tomás nos ha trasladado tanto su entusiasmo en relación al trabajo realizado como al buen hacer de nuestros equipos en terreno. La propuesta del programa que Tomás y nuestro equipo ha identificado y que nos va a ayudar a concretar durante esta semana sería el apoyo durante aproximadamente un año al Sistema Local de Salud de la comuna de Petit Goâve para evitar que la mortalidad materna e infantil se incremente de forma significativa por el efecto del terremoto sobre un contexto previo de pobreza extrema. Los ejes de trabajo de este programa serán garantizar: - La atención al parto y al neonato con criterios de eficacia en el hospital Notre Dame (Petit Goave). - Que las mujeres embarazadas, así como niños y niñas menores de cinco años pueden acceder a consulta antenatal y a tratamiento de forma temprana de los embarazos, partos de riesgo y trastornos del crecimiento. - Los cuidados a la población infantil (menor de 5 años) ingresada en el Hospital de Notre Dame. Por otro lado, Pino González, enfermera y presidenta de Médicos del Mundo Canarias, vuelve a Haití para coordinar nuestra intervención a medio plazo. 3 MdM Belgium: works in Petit Goave hospital for maternal care, gynaecology and surgery. MdM Argentina: Durante el mes de marzo la Delegación Argentina de la organización humanitaria Médicos del Mundo realizó una misión en la zona de la catástrofe en Haití evaluando la situación socio-sanitaria y analizando intervenciones de post-emergencia de mediano y largo plazo en la etapa de reconstrucción con un equipo coordinado por el actual Presidente de Médicos del Mundo Argentina, el sanitarista Gonzalo Basile junto a la médica clínica Ana Clara Cafaro, un especialista en salud pública y emergencias y un logista local. Médicos del Mundo Argentina trabajó en los barrios periféricos de Puerto Príncipe, pero principalmente en las zonas rurales con población campesina de Leogane y Jacmel, también seriamente afectadas por el terremoto. "Nuestra misión fue para evaluar las necesidades colectivas de salud de la comunidad haitiana priorizando escuchar los problemas prioritarios que plantearon las organizaciones sociales, campesinas y de la sociedad civil de Haití en Leogane y Jacmel. Sin duda las condiciones estructurales de pobreza y exclusión social como de los problemas en la salud pública en todo Haití obviamente se profundizaron con semejante catástrofe. Por eso desde Médicos del Mundo Argentina creemos necesario trabajar en proyectos de reconstrucción sobre los niveles de accesibilidad a los servicios de salud de las poblaciones rurales y peri-urbanas, fortalecer mediante acciones combinadas la Red de Atención Primaria de la Salud de las zonas dañadas y donde muchos puestos de salud se desintegraron, y un capítulo muy importante pasa por la cuestión epidemiológica priorizando dimensiones de salud comunitaria, salud ambiental, la prevención y control de enfermedades como la promoción de la salud a nivel colectivo. La malaria, fiebre tifoidea, tuberculosis, VIH-SIDA, alta mortalidad infantil y materna, malnutrición y desnutrición crónica en más del 60% de la población haitiana, IRAS y diarreicas, diabetes, entre otros problemas son moneda frecuente de la emergencia que vive la sociedad haitiana. Indudablemente los procesos de saludenfermedad de post-emergencia se agravarán de acuerdo a los determinantes sociales y económicos de la situación pre-existente en salud en Haití y sin duda por las propias condiciones de vida en los refugios o asentamientos que claramente afectan a los más pobres ya que son los que menos posibilidades tuvieron de desplazarse a otras regiones del país o al exterior", consideraron el equipo de Haití de Médicos del Mundo- Argentina MdM Germany: Thanks to a partnership, MdM Germany found a helicopter which is used all the time on the field, for expatriates movement, emergency evacuation of sick persons, fret transport. Munich helps Haiti, press conference: the City of Munich made a donation to MdM Germany and Handicap International Germany. They invited both NGOs to a joint press conference on 15th January, where our staff member Lecia Feszczak presented MdM network s emergency and long term programs in Haiti to several regional Medias. Working side by side : Focus of MdM and Handicap International s statements were the work of our volunteers in the general hospital of Port-au-Prince. Munich s Deputy Major Hep Monatzeder launched a call for donations to the population of the Bavarian capital. Une mission en Haïti la semaine dernière a permis de repérer les nouveaux besoins des équipes des MdM travaillant en Haïti en terme de soutien logistique. L équipe de la BLSD a ainsi, entre autres, assuré les transferts de 195 expatriés du 18 janvier à mi-mars. 4 >>> Obtaining permit to stay for seriously ill foreigners: method used for the network MdM has been fighting to obtain residency permit and full access to healthcare for seriously ill foreigners: it was one of the main objectives of the European observatory and it still remains one of Huma s. In order to work not only on lobbying but also for direct help (as MdM always does!) we have set up a common system for the last 5 years to obtain medical certificates helping obtaining permits. When you are in front of a patient, seriously ill, risking expulsion and if you need a proof that the treatment is not available in his/her country of origin: please send a mail to me and Nadège explaining: the pathology, treatment needed, time left to get a certificate. If MdM France works in the country x, Nadège makes the link with the desk and field. If other countries of the network work in the country x, I make the same. Then we obtain a certificate from the team in the field. We keep a record of all certificates obtained so that we can use them again for same pathology in the same country. Please do not forget to send us the result of the procedure: did the foreigner obtain a permit to stay or not. nathalie.simonnot@medecinsdumonde.net et nadege.drouot@medecinsdumonde.net. >>> The Huma network: a) The network grows:a new organisation, ARCA in Rumania, is now part of the network. b) Huma National Event in Sweden (February 23 rd ) MdM Sweden organized the national event for Huma network in Stockholm. All political parties were represented, and also several major newspapers and NGO s. Benoit Blondel (Huma staff) came and talked about the situation of undocumented migrants in Europe. It was a rewarding afternoon with a lot of discussion and strong opinions. During the discussions, all political parties in the parliament were represented and could give their view and opinion. Two MPs participated and five politicians from the county council in Stockholm, among them the most influential county commissioner who is a former MP. In the concluding section, the moderator had a dialogue with a well-known volunteer in MdM Sweden and with the coordinator of a Swedish network working for access to health care for undocumented migrants. Together they summarized how the development has been in this question during the last 15 years. Together they could see some good things happening even though it takes long time. Their opinions seemed to be that there is hope, with this new enquiry and some positive political promises, but there is every reason to keep a critical eye on the process. Moderator was Mrs. Eva Nilsson-Bågenholm President of the Swedish Medical Association. c) At the European level, the coordination team and the focal points are organising the launch of a European Declaration of Healthcare professionals for indiscriminate access to healthcare. Also, a pressing advocacy action is on, as the Spanish Presidency of the EU wants to propose a recommendation to be adopted by the Council of Ministers of health to sign, on universal access to health care for children and pregnant women irrespective of their residence status. The focal points of the Huma network are contacting the experts of their respective countries who are going to attend the preparatory meetings of the Council of Ministers of health, in order to ask them to support the Spanish proposal. Let s see what happens! d) In the area of Communication, Events and Marketing, MdM Portugal participated in the workshop sponsored by EPIM (European Programme for Integration and Migration) in Lisbon on 15 and 17/03/10, for the Huma network in Lisbon, under the theme "Media and Communication." >>> Improving the quality of MdM actions in Hiv, Hepatitis B&C, Tuberculosis prevention: Common funding request for national projects in Europe We succeeded in sending a full project proposal to DG Sanco on deadline day (March 19 th). We shall get the answer by July or August. Yet, according to medical researches and aid workers the country has scarce resources to help visually impaired people. Building on the experience of 8 years Operation Sourire in Cambodia, MdM Germany is evaluating in partnership with MdM France the opportunity to start further activities in the Thandwe district. This project should provide ophthalmological surgery and care by specialist teams visiting at least twice a year. Furthermore it should add a focus on local capacity building and eye health awareness. An exploratory mission will assess different strategies and options on site during September Open End for open.med : The agency Rosenton, together with the renowned location Muffatwerk, organized on 15 th January a support-concert for MdM Germany s domestic mission in Munich: open.med. The band Soulmates and DJ Scarlett supplied the audience (200) with evergreen & rare soul sounds, of course on honorary basis. Thanks to the generosity of the public a donation of was collected. The newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung took the opportunity to report about open.med. 6 >>> MdM Argentine / Argentina Durante marzo un equipo de salud de Médicos del Mundo Argentina llevó adelante una misión exploratoria en la zona de la cástastrofe en Chile atención sanitaria, evaluación de la situación sociosanitaria y análisis de espacios de intervención en salud coordinado por el actual vicepresidente Javier Meritano (epidemiólogo - médico pediatra), un médico generalista, un especialista en emergencias y un logista. El pasado sábado 26 de febrero la zona centro y sur de la república de Chile fue devastada por un importante terremoto de escala Richter 8.8 y posterior tsunami que generó por lo menos 700 muertes reconocidas oficialmente hasta el momento, más de 2 millones de personas víctimas, 1.5 millón de viviendas destruidas y la militarización de la región afectada. Los departamentos del BioBío y de Maule fueron las regiones visitadas por el equipo de salud de Médicos del Mundo. Actualmente la delegación de Médicos del Mundo se encuentra coordinando acciones y necesidades colectivas en salud de la población afectada con organizaciones sociales mapuches, asociaciones de pescadores artesanales y espacios profesionales de salud de la sociedad civil chilena como también en contacto con el Ministerio de Salud de Chile. El equipo de salud de Médicos del Mundo trabajó principalmente en las zonas de Tirúa, Cañete, Llico y Tubul en la provincia de Arauco; como también en Concepción, Talcahuano y Dichato. Médicos del Mundo Argentina y su presencia en América del Sur: Se llevó adelante en la ciudad de Bogotá, Colombia, el XI Congreso Latinoamericano de Medicina Social y Salud Colectiva "La Salud en la Agenda Política y Social en América Latina", donde fueron especialmente invitados miembros de Médicos del Mundo. Se dieron cita más de 400 académicos, intelectuales, representantes de Gobiernos y organizaciones de la sociedad civil de Canadá, México, EE.UU., Brasil, Colombia, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Perú, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras, entre otros; en el trabajo de pensar los desafíos de la Medicina Social en el continente. Entre ellos estuvo Gonzalo Basile, actual Presidente MdM Argentina. Así durante el Congreso, se llevaron adelante Paneles y Mesas redondas donde se presentaron 2 trabajos referidos a la labor de Médicos del Mundo y al trabajo académico de sus integrantes: 1- Modelos de Protección Social y Salud en América del Sur. El caso del MERCOSUR: un debate pendiente en Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay y Brasil Interculturalidad, Epidemiología comunitaria y participación popular: la experiencia y praxis de Médicos del Mundo-Argentina en el Cono Sur. En su Asamblea de miembros de ALAMES (Asociación Latinoamericana de Medicina Social) se eligieron como nuevos coordinadores generales a la Dra. Nila Heredia (Bolivia) y Mario Rovere (Argentina). El próximo Congreso Latinoamericano de Medicina Social y Salud Colectiva será en 2011 en la ciudad de Montevideo, Uruguay. Esta nueva gestión implicó que ALAMES y MdM Argentina comenzaran a trabajar en conjunto con una agenda en común para América Latina, cuestión que ya se vio reflejada tanto en la crisis humanitaria de Haití como en Chile (ver ). Asimismo, en diciembre del 2009 una delegación de MdM Argentina, siendo coordinadores de la Comisión de Salud Internacional del Consejo Consultivo de la Sociedad Civil del MERCOSUR, fue protagonista en la Cumbre Social de MERCOSUR realizada en la ciudad de Montevideo, República del Uruguay, donde se trabajó en una plataforma sobre la Salud Colectiva desarrollada por organizaciones de la sociedad civil del Cono Sur. Dichas conclusiones en formato de documento fueron presentadas directamente a los Presidentes de Argentina, Brasil, Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile y Paraguay. También durante este mes de febrero del 2010, el Presidente de Médicos del Mundo Argentina fue invitado al Seminario realizado en Brasilia sobre "Reforma Sanitaria y Determinaciones Sociales de la Salud" realizado por el reconocido CEBES (Centro de Estudios Brasileños de Salud), con la presencia de académicos e investigadores de medicina social y salud colectiva de Brasil, Argentina, México, entre otros. >>> MdM Belgique / Belgium / Belgica / Belgie: Bilan du Plan Hiver 2010 : Les beaux jours étant de retour, le plan hiver a fermé ses portes dimanche 28 mars Médecins du Monde s engage en Belgique depuis 10 ans auprès des sans-abri, en partenariat avec le SAMU Social. Cet hiver, nous avons constaté une forte augmentation du nombre de sans-abri. Les efforts de Médecins du Monde auprès du public accueilli par le SAMU Social ont été intensifiés : depuis le commencement du grand froid (mi-novembre) jusqu à aujourd hui les équipes para-médicales sont intervenues plus de fois! Médecins du Monde a assuré le suivi intensif d environ 400 patients grâce à l aide volontaire d un grand nombre de professionnels de la santé offrant une partie de leur temps libre, 45 infirmièr(e)s, 10 médecins et 4 bénévoles pour la coordination et l administration. 7 Les constats de Médecins du Monde sur le terrain Les pathologies rencontrées sont liées au froid ainsi qu aux problèmes d hygiène : infections respiratoires, affections dermatologiques. Une grande souffrance psychique des personnes sans-abri symptômes de stress, fatigue chronique, troubles du sommeil, troubles anxieux, troubles de l humeur, perte de repères, troubles somatoformes, etc. Un manque d accès aux soins dentaires : pénurie de dentistes pour les plus démunis, barrières administratives importantes. 30,5% des patients ont entre 20 et 29 ans, un public de plus en plus jeune. Les actions et demandes de Médecins du Monde : A) Une meilleure accessibilité aux services de santé mentale pour les personnes sans-abri : MdM renforce son partenariat avec le SAMU Social pour prendre en charge les souffrances psychiques. B) Plus d accès aux soins dentaires : MdM renforce son partenariat avec le Clos Sainte-Thérèse pour une consultation gratuite chez un dentiste. C) Davantage de suivi dans les soins : MdM soutient le développement et le renforcement des maisons médicales et plus généralement du réseau entier de médecine générale, pour un accès à tous. D) MdM lance un appel aux médecins généralistes, assistant(e)s sociales et dentistes souhaitant s engager dans du bénévolat (selon leur disponibilité). E) MdM propose à la ville d Anvers, au CPAS ainsi qu aux associations d aide aux sans-abri de collaborer ensemble à la mise en place d un plan hiver anversois en MALI : Inauguration du centre de formation MdM à Youwarou (région de Mopti) : Clôturant de façon festive la phase préparatoire d un important programme de Santé primaire au centre du Mali, Médecins du Monde a inauguré son nouveau centre de formation en invitant la population et les autorités de la Région. Plus de 120 personnes ont participé à la fête. Le centre, situé à Youwarou dans la Région de Mopti, a été baptisé «Maison Louis Bégault» en hommage à feu Monsieur Bégault, récemment décédé, et dont la générosité a permis le lancement de ce programme. Le Cercle de Youwarou est une des régions les plus pauvres et les plus isolées du Mali. Cette zone est inondée chaque année par la crue du Delta central du Niger, ce qui la rend inaccessible par la route et ce qui précarise les populations nomades. L objectif de MdM est d améliorer les activités de soins de santé primaires, via la formation et la supervision d agents de santé locaux. Cela inclut notamment l amélioration des centres de santé communautaires (réhabilitation et équipement, mise en place d un système de gestion des déchets médicaux,...). Soins pour les femmes enceintes au Mali / région de Youwarou : Dans le Cercle de Youwarou (région de Mopti) vivent personnes soumises aux lois de la nature. Sept mois par an, la zone est inondée et les villages sont complètement isolés les uns des autres. Les 5 mois restant, des dizaines de milliers de nomades s installent, les Bozos tentent de vivre de la pêche et les peuls y élèvent leurs troupeaux. Dans le cadre de son programme de soins de santé primaires, Médecins du Monde veut porter une importance particulière aux soins de santé materno-infantile. Médecins du Monde a acquis des pirogues motorisées et engagé une équipe médicale pour superviser les activités liées aux grossesses à risque dans les centres de santé. MdM souhaite doter le centre de santé de référence d un échographe et former les médecins à son utilisation afin de suivre les grossesses et dépister les anomalies. >>> MdM Canada Au Nicaragua, pauvreté et violence familiale et sexuelle sont le quotidien de milliers de femmes nicaraguayennes : une femme sur deux a vécu, au moins une fois, une forme de violence de la part de son conjoint. MdM s est implanté dans la région de Matagalpa, particulièrement défavorisée. En effet, 83,4 % de la population vit avec moins de 1 $ par jour et 45 % dans le reste du pays, 15 % de la population n a aucun accès aux services de santé et 8,5 % dans le reste du pays. L objectif du programme mis en place en juillet 2008 est d améliorer les conditions de santé sexuelle et reproductive et de réduire la vulnérabilité des femmes victimes de violence et d abus sexuels. Ainsi plusieurs activités sont menées : un bureau de santé pour offrir des services de dépistage du VIH et des IST et des soins de santé primaires, un service d hébergement de dépannage ouvert jour et nuit pour accueillir les femmes et leurs enfants et leur offrir un soutien psychosocial, des actions de prévention du VIH/sida et autres IST chez les travailleuses du sexe et les femmes à risques. >>> MdM Espagne / Spain / España : Senegal : Durante esta semana el equipo multidisciplinar de Senegal ha viajado a Barcelona para presentar las conclusiones de la Investigación-Acción sobre Salud Sexual y Reproductiva realizada en Velingara, Senegal. El lunes 22/3, tuvo lugar una dinámica interna para valorar los logros y los retos que plantea utilizar este tipo de metodología participativa en los proyectos de cooperación. Acudieron el equipo operativo de Catalunya, Junta directiva de Catalunya y de sede central, la Desk de referencia, Unidad de Transversalización de Género y DDHH y unidad de Estudios y Gestión del Conocimiento. El martes 23 se presentó el proyecto en la Federación Catalana de ONGDs, con amplia participación de personas vinculadas a la cooperación catalana. Se presentó esta experiencia de metodología investigación acción, como instrumento válido para la cooperación al desarrollo. Ainsi, c'est aujourd'hui près de 30 patients qui bénéficient de ce traitement, avec à ce stade un taux de rétention de 100%. Cette nouvelle activité, impulsée lors de la Conférence de Consensus National en Novembre 2007, vient renforcer l'offre de soins visant à réduire les risques liés à l'usage de drogue au travers d'un centre d'accueil et de soins et des interventions de rue. Par ailleurs, le centre national de formation et de ressources, localisé dans le centre de soins, permet la formation des acteurs locaux impliqués dans ce domaine. Crise alimentaire Sahel : Face à la situation de crise alimentaire au Sahel, MdM se prépare à démarrer en avril 2010 de nouveaux projets. a) Au Niger, intervenant depuis 4 ans dans la région de Tahoua en appui au système de santé du district de Keïta notamment, MdM va étendre son soutien à la prise en charge ambulatoire des cas de malnutrition aiguë sévère et modérée aux districts de Abalak et Tchintabaraden. L'action va également portée sur le soutien et/ou la mise en place de Centres de Réhabilitation Nutritionnelle Intensive pour les enfants sévères malnutris souffrant de pathologies associées, dans les 3 districts. b) Au Tchad, dans la région du Kanem où l'association est déjà présente au travers d'un programme de santé maternelle et de prise en charge des fistules obstétricales, MdM interviendra en complément des activités de lutte contre la malnutrition menées par Action Contre la Faim dans le district de Mao. MdM assurera la prise en charge des pathologies associées à la malnutrition dans le Centre de Nutrition Thérapeutique de l'hôpital de Mao. Par ailleurs, afin de prévenir une détérioration de l'état de santé de la population qui est un des déterminants de la malnutrition aigüe, MdM appuiera une vingtaine de centres de santé de la région pour la prise en charge médicale des enfants de moins de 5 ans, des femmes enceintes et allaitantes. Mayotte : Mayotte, habitants, dont plus du quart en situation irrégulière, est un territoire français en voie de départementalisation, mais dans lequel les lois de la République ne s'appliquent pas ou sont supplantées par des pratiques d'exception. Les obstacles à l'accès aux soins y sont nombreux, malgré des efforts certains réalisés au niveau du système de santé local. Le premier obstacle est d'ordre sécuritaire. Il règne une pression policière envers les sans-papiers sans commune mesure avec le reste du territoire: expulsions pour réalisées dans tout l hexagone, alors que l'île ne représente que 0.3% de la population en France Heureusement la HALDE (Haute autorité de lutte contre les discriminations et pour l égalité) vient de rendre un avis (délibération n du 1er mars 2010) condamnant les pratiques de l état français (saisie par Aides, la Cimade, le Collectif Migrants Mayotte, le Gisti et Médecins du Monde). Elle «conclut au bien-fondé des affirmations de discrimination dans l accès aux soins des étrangers en situation irrégulière et de leurs enfants ainsi que des mineurs étrangers en situation irrégulière ainsi que des mineurs étrangers isolés résidant à Mayotte». Elle demande aux autorités «de mettre en place l AME [aide médicale d'état] ou une couverture médicale équivalente à Mayotte ( ) sans attendre la départementalisation» et, étant donné «la violation manifeste des stipulations de la Convention internationale des droits de l enfant ( ) à ce que les enfants dont les parents se trouvent en situation irrégulière ainsi que les mineurs isolés bénéficient d une affiliation directe à la sécurité sociale». Dans l attente de ces mesures, elle demande en urgence «une circulaire à destination du Centre hospitalier de Mayotte et de l ensemble des structures de soins» permettant un accès effectif aux soins, en particulier pour tous les enfants mineurs et les femmes ayant besoin de soins pré et post-nataux. >>> MdM Grèce / Greece / Grecia / Ελλάδα: New centre for access to health care opened in February 2010 in Perama (deprived city west of Piraeus) in a building let for free by Lion s Club. Last but not least, medical and psycho-social orientations for homeless people will tak e place in this office. Haiti Charity Events: Two charity events were organized in two different district of Tokyo to raise funds for the projects run by MdM in Haiti : on January 31st in Daikanyama, and on March 18th in Roppongi. >>> MdM Pays-Bas / Netherlands / Paises Bajos / Nederland Medoc project for undocumented migrants in the Netherlands: The Care4mi group has been extended with a new team of Medoc volunteers and together with the existing migrant volunteers they will conduct outreach-activities with the aim to reach the more isolated undocumented migrants in Amsterdam with information, education and for taking testimonials. Stateless Roma project in the Netherlands: Based on the practical findings of more than 500 mediations last year with stateless Roma regarding medical, socio-economic and legal issues, Dokters van de Wereld produced a publication to inform local and national government and intermediaries on the vulnerable situation of the stateless Roma in the Netherlands. A contribution of the legal context and migration history of Roma was provided by Amnesty International and Anna Frank foundation. (only in Dutch). Harm reduction project in Serbia: MdM s Serbian partner Veza obtained high accreditation points from the Ministry of Health for the sensitisation trainings they conduct for general practitioners (GPs) in In this training, GPs are introduced to harm reduction principles as an effective approach in providing health care for drug users. In each of the two trainings that Veza conducted so far, 30 GPs participated amongst which a client friendly network of GPs will be established. The aim is to set up a referral structure from Veza services towards client friendly clinics in Belgrade. Hiv prevention project in Curaçao: To build the capacity of our national partner Consperanza in Curaçao to carry on the sex workers project, we trained a new group of outreach workers and enabled the main outreach worker to attend a training abroad. Together they will expand the visits to Snacks to reach the sex workers for HIV-prevention purposes. Communication: We are working on a web based annual report of MdM Netherlands. 10 >>> MdM Portugal Guinee Bissau: in the framework of the Protege a Tua Vida / Protect your life project, the centre for care and volontary screening and the obstetrical service of the hospital Hospital Marcelino Banca de Bubaque are finally ready! In Bafata MdM led a training on sexually transmitted infections and Hiv for 18 traditional birth attendants and started the activities in the Mobile Unit. In Bissau and Bubaque MdM lead various activities for IEC / CMC and counseling on HIV / AIDS and STIs. In the framework of the project "Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools implemented in the Region of Biombo, MdM developed several awareness campaigns for students in schools and for the management committees of community water points. On 22/03/10, the MdM team with teachers and students participated in a march in Bissau to celebrate World Water Day MdM in Porto finally achieved its goal of changing facilities for the Centre of Porto, which allows greater proximity to the target population and partners. MdM teams in Porto are now implementing projects "Third Age" and "Estilus", funded by the ministry of health. Within the Inter institutions Network of Support for Homeless, MdM goes on assuming various responsibilities, in particular that of updating the Resource Guide of the City of Porto; thanks to the partnership with the Association for the Development of Tropical Medicine, MdM began the training of interviewers PREVIH and started an enquiry with Sex Workers. In celebration of World Health Day, on 07/04/10, MdM project Rotas para a Saúde (wheels for health) leads an Information, Education and Communication action on "Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages: A happiness that can be a mistake!" On the same day, MdM, in partnership with the Municipality of Oeiras and the Parish of Queijas, makes health screenings (cholesterol, blood glucose, BMI and blood pressure) for the local population with medical advice and distribution of awareness materials on issues related to cardiovascular disease and endocrine. The Porto team thanks to its night outreach team will do screenings (cholesterol, glucose and triglyceride levels), physical examination, evaluation of arterial tension, waist circumference and body mass index. In the area of Communication, Events and Marketing, MdM will participate in the annual event "European Development Days 2010," sponsored by IPAD (Portuguese Institute for Development Aid), with the theme: "Citizenship and Development" on 21 and 22/04/10, in Lisbon. The "second edition of Corrida Solidária," continues to advance with more than 750 schools and 130,000 students involved, many races have already taken place and many still to be completed by the end of this school year! We now have about 10,000 friends and fans on Facebook! >>> MdM Royaume-Uni / United Kingdom / Reino Unido The Project: London has won an excellence award at the Tower Hamlets Third Sector Excellence Awards in March. The award was presented to Doctors of the World UK for its work with vulnerable people. Elinor Middleton, the development director attended the ceremony and was presented with a certificate and an award. This month Project:London will be commencing outreach activities with Alone In London. Project:London will be helping to give health advocacy and advice. Alone in London was created for people aged to help them out of homelessness or prevent them from becoming homeless. Annually they see 600 young people and receive at least 2000 calls per year. Generally the service users don t have much contact with their GPs. Doctors of the World UK held its annual conference in March with the theme of Climate Change & Health. A number of speakers presented their views on the subject with talks from: Professor Andy Haines from the director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Jean Lambert MEP for the Green Party, Jonathon Porritt Director of Forum For the Future and Krishna Krishnamurthy, an independent consultant on disaster risk reduction and environmental security. The event also included a workshop led by MdM Netherlands Board of Directors member Remco van de Pas. The conference discussed how the scientific community needs to take a lead in stressing the impact climate change will have on health as well as acting to arrest climate change. Doctors of the World UK attended a Congo Now event at the House of Commons where it also exhibited photos by the Luis Valtuena humanitarian photography price winner Andrew McConnell. His photos were taken from a series conveying the suffering of victims of civil war in the Congo. The exhibition will also be shown at various upcoming events in Cardiff and London in the coming months.
