The academic quality and the variety of its postgraduate European study programmes are renowned worldwide. The College of Europe is the most genuinely European of all the university institutes of European studies: it attracts a highly qualified pan-european faculty and welcomes students from across the entire continent and further afield; it enjoys a truly European atmosphere on its Bruges and (Warsaw) campuses, and it can rely on its network of personal and institutional relationships developed over the past 58 years throughout Europe and beyond. 3 58 years of experience in European studies: a unique institution 58 ans d expérience dans le domaine des études européennes: une institution unique The College was the world s fi rst university institute of postgraduate studies and training in European affairs, and remains one of the most reputed and innovative to this day. Its origins date back to the 1948 Hague Congress when Salvador de Madariaga, a Spanish statesman, thinker and writer in exile, proposed the establishment of a College where university graduates from many different countries could study and live together. A group of Bruges citizens led by the Reverend Father Karel Verleye were successful in attracting the College to Bruges, and Professor Hendrik Brugmans, one of the intellectual leaders of the European Movement at the time, became the fi rst Rector of the College of Europe. In the wake of the changes in Central and Eastern Europe following the fall of Communism, a second campus was opened in (Warsaw) at the invitation of the Polish Government and with the support of the European Union in The College now operates as one College two campuses and what was once referred to as the esprit de Bruges, is now known as the esprit du Collège. Le Collège d Europe fut le premier institut d études et de formation postuniversitaire spécialisé dans les questions européennes. Il demeure l un des plus renommé et innovateur dans son domaine. 4 The College Forum Le Forum du Collège The College of Europe welcomes high level speakers to both its campuses, many of whom use the occasion to further the European debate. Conferences and seminars are organised throughout the year where practitioners and students enter into critical dialogue and a direct exchange of views over issues affecting European integration and international relations. 5 Study and experience Europe Etudier et vivre l Europe The College of Europe is characterised by its academic independence, its bilingualism, the diversity of its teaching staff and its multicultural environment, which together create a genuine European microcosm. The academic programmes of Bruges and (Warsaw) provide students with a specialised grounding in the European dimension of their fi elds of study, as well as an in-depth understanding of Europe in all its complexity. By working together in an international community of students, teaching assistants, faculty and staff members from all corners of the continent and beyond, students experience Europe fi rst hand and benefi t from a wide range of teaching methods and challenging teamwork and negotiation exercises. Student body Entry requirements and rigorous selection procedures ensure that students who are recruited are of the highest calibre. The student body, around 300 students in Bruges and over 100 in, reflects a variety of cultures and a variety of personal experiences. Students come from over 50 countries and each speaks a number of languages. All have completed a university degree in a fi eld appropriate for participation in the College s postgraduate programme, and many already hold a postgraduate degree. Their average age is 25. An increasing number of students are seconded from international organisations and national foreign services. 6 Academic life The one year programme lasts from September until the end of June and is taught in English and French. To be awarded the diploma, students must take oral and written examinations at the end of each semester, and submit a Master s Thesis in English or French. The thesis gives students the opportunity to undertake individual research, conducted primarily in the second semester, under the supervision of a faculty member. The programmes are enriched by study trips to the European institutions and, for students at (Warsaw), also to neighbouring countries. Due to the College s extensive network of contacts, students have the opportunity to meet and discuss with policy-makers, practitioners, and representatives of the business community throughout their year at the College. Pour obtenir le diplôme, les étudiants doivent réussir les examens oraux et écrits à la fi n de chaque semestre, et présenter un mémoire en anglais ou en français. Libraries The libraries of the College of Europe contain one of the world s best collections in European studies with volumes and periodicals. Available information resources focus principally on European law, economics, international relations and diplomacy, and politics and administration, with a special focus at the (Warsaw) campus on EU neighbourhood policy and the role of the EU as a regional actor. Both libraries host European Documentation Centres linked to a worldwide network supported by European Union institutions which are continuously updated. In addition, information from international organisations is readily available. Internet access is provided in both libraries. Bibliothèques Les bibliothèques du Collège d Europe constituent avec leurs livres et périodiques l une des meilleures collections au monde relatives aux études européennes. Les sources d information disponibles portent principalement sur le droit, l économie, les relations internationales et diplomatiques, et les sciences politiques et administratives dans leurs aspects liés à l Europe. Les questions liées à la politique de voisinage de l Union européenne et au rôle de l Union européenne comme acteur régional sont davantage mises en relief au campus de (Varsovie). 7 One College - two campuses Un Collège - deux campus Student life The College s residential life is a vital component of the student experience. By living together, students from across Europe and beyond work together and exchange views in both the academic and social environment. Through the intensity of this personal experience and interaction, students become familiar with the full cultural and social diversity of Europe and learn how to operate in an international environment. Each year, students on both campuses are supported by the Offi ce of Student Affairs in the organisation of a number of conferences as well as a series of national events and other social activities celebrating the diverse cultural heritages of their respective countries. Vie étudiante La vie en résidence au Collège d Europe contribue à créer un environnement d échanges d idées, de travail et de vie en commun pour des étudiants venant de toute l Europe et du reste du monde. Les résidences sont un élément-clé de la vie de l étudiant. Cette expérience intense et ces relations humaines partagées permettent aux étudiants de se familiariser avec la diversité culturelle et sociale de l Europe et leur apprennent à agir et à se mouvoir dans un environnement international. Chaque année, le Bureau des Affaires étudiantes propose aux étudiants des deux campus un soutien dans l organisation des conférences, des soirées nationales et des événements sociaux variés qui mettent à l honneur les patrimoines culturels de leur pays respectif. All students are allocated their own room in a student residence with a private bathroom. In addition, each room has a private telephone number, network and internet access. Each residence features a common room as well as a kitchen area, equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. 8 Student-organised debates, plays and sporting events are also important features on the annual student calendar. In recent years, students have formed working groups on various issues, including one looking at Belarus, and have been actively involved in social issues. Students have also organised a fi lm club, student choir and rock band. College-organised study trips and exchanges between the campuses are organised during the academic year. Moreover, teams of students also participate in international academic competitions such as the European Law Moot Court. Student representatives are elected to represent the students views and to serve as liaisons between the administration and the students. Des débats, des pièces de théâtre et des rencontres sportives, organisés à l initiative des étudiants, représentent également des moments importants dans le programme annuel. Ces dernières années, des étudiants ont créé des groupes de travail sur des thèmes variés comme sur la Biélorussie, tandis que d autres se sont engagés dans des activités à caractère social. Les étudiants ont également organisé un club de cinéphiles, une chorale estudiantine et une bande de rock. De plus, des voyages d étude et des échanges entre les deux campus sont également organisés en cours d année. Des équipes d étudiants participent à des concours académiques internationaux comme le European Law Moot Court. Des représentants d étudiants sont élus chaque année pour faire connaître le point de vue des étudiants et assurer la liaison entre ceux-ci et l administration. I remember Bruges mostly for the friendship and the fun. It was a magical moment that still stands suspended in time. Whenever I return, which is often, I still half-expect to meet my younger self crossing the Markt with my fellow students. It was a period of camaraderie and discovery; a mix of idealism and endeavour which has guided me personally and professionally ever since. The theme was Europe, but the experience was universal. 9 Culture and recreation at your doorstep The campus in Bruges, with its seven halls of residence, is located in the historic centre of what is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and a former European Capital of Culture. The campus in with its two halls of residence forms part of a 120-hectare historical park and nature reserve, situated in the southern part of Warsaw. Both cities house excellent theatres and concert buildings, as well as numerous museums, and offer a wide variety of cultural events. For Bruges students, Brussels is one hour away, whereas students can reach the centre of Warsaw in thirty minutes. Culture et divertissement au seuil de votre porte Le campus de Bruges et ses sept résidences sont situés dans le centre historique de l une des plus belles villes d Europe, ancienne Capitale européenne de la Culture. 10 Director of Communications and Languages / Directeur de la Communication et des Langues A. O Neill The Language Service Le Service des langues The Language Service of the College of Europe supports students throughout their studies in the two working languages of the College - French and English - by offering specialised language courses and workshops targeted to both the academic and professional needs of the students. Courses in German and Spanish are offered on both campuses. Russian is also offered on the (Warsaw) campus. In certain cases, students are able to sit tests for internationally recognised language certificates in these languages. On the Bruges and (Warsaw) campuses courses are also offered in Dutch and Polish respectively to help students integrate into the local environment. Students are encouraged to exchange language skills in this linguistically rich environment throughout their year at the College and have access to a variety of language learning resources. Students have the opportunity to follow communication workshops where an active approach is taken towards professionalising presentation and public speaking skills. Students are filmed, and given linguistic and skills feedback on an individual basis. Students also have the opportunity to practice and improve negotiation skills through organised workshops. Les étudiants ont l occasion de suivre des ateliers de communication, fondés sur une méthode active, destinée à parfaire la façon de se présenter et de prendre la parole en public. Ils sont filmés, avant de recevoir une évaluation personnelle de leurs compétences linguistiques et de communication. Les étudiants ont également l occasion de mettre en pratique et d améliorer leurs talents en matière de négociation par des ateliers offerts. 11 The Careers Service Le Service Carrière The Careers Service provides College students and graduates with the tools to prepare them for a successful professional career. Throughout the academic year, students are supported in developing their individual career plan and in their job search. In the first semester, seminars as well as interactive workshops are offered on how to create a career plan and on how to research the job market, on cover letter and C.V. writing. The second semester features a seminar on interview skills, accompanied by a simulation job interview. Job search strategies are also presented. Thanks to the Careers Service s strong links with the Alumni Association of the College, a number of presentations by former students on various aspects of the job market and the current work environment, as well as the special considerations of the European job market, are organised. A Networking Evening organised on both campuses gives students the opportunity to meet alumni from a variety of professional sectors, helping them in the determination of their career path. During the second semester recruitment events are organised to help students in the final step of their job search. Job offers, which often stem from the alumni network, are distributed to students and alumni on a weekly basis. Throughout the year students can also take advantage of the Careers and Languages Centre, which contains books on every aspect of the job search process, as well as foreign language learning materials. Le Service Carrière met à la disposition des étudiants du Collège les outils utiles à la défi nition d un projet professionnel enrichissant. Il les prépare de manière intensive, pendant toute l année académique, à l accès au marché du travail en les épaulant à chaque étape de leur recherche d emploi. Pendant le premier semestre, des séminaires sont organisés afin d aider les étudiants à élaborer un projet de carrière et à inventorier le marché du travail. Des ateliers interactifs sont également consacrés à la rédaction des C.V. et de la lettre de motivation. Au second semestre, un séminaire sur les techniques d entretiens est prévu, offrant la possibilité de participer à des simulations individuelles d entretien d embauche. Les stratégies de recherche d emploi sont également abordées. Le Service Carrière travaille en collaboration avec l Association des anciens étudiants du Collège. De nombreuses présentations par des anciens sont organisées portant sur les conditions particulières du marché du travail européen. Une soirée networking est organisée sur les deux campus et donne la possibilité aux étudiants de rencontrer des anciens issus de secteurs d activité variés leur permettant ainsi de défi nir avec plus de précision leurs projets futurs. Durant le second semestre, des séances de recrutement sont organisées afi n d aider les étudiants dans la dernière étape de leur recherche d emploi. Des offres d emploi, émanant pour beaucoup du réseau des anciens, sont distribuées hebdomadairement aux étudiants et aux anciens. 12 Academic programmes Les programmes académiques In Bruges, students enrol in one of four academic departments: European Economic Studies, European Legal Studies, European Political and Administrative Studies, or EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies. There is a possibility for certain students in law or economics to participate in the European Law and Economic Analysis Specialisation. There is also a possibility for certain students in Economics to participate in the European Economic Integration and Business specialisation. As a rule, students take one course each semester in European General Studies. Upon completion, students are awarded the Master of Arts in European Economic Studies, Master in European Community Law (LL M), Master of Arts in European Political and Administrative Studies or Master of Arts in EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies respectively. At (Warsaw), the study programme analyses the process of European integration from a pluridisciplinary perspective. After having covered the historical, political, economical and legal foundations of European integration in the fi rst semester, students specialise during the second semester in a specifi c thematic major, which also follows the pluridisciplinary approach. 13 European Interdisciplinary Studies Etudes européennes interdisciplinaires The interdisciplinary studies programme at offers students the possibility to analyse the European integration process beyond disciplinary boundaries and to acquire a deepened knowledge of some of its aspects. This specialisation thus takes into account that the phenomenon of European integration goes beyond the limits of one discipline. It also responds to the increasing need for professionals specialised in European affairs who have a general grasp of the European integration process. Le programme d études interdisciplinaires à offre aux étudiants la possibilité d analyser le processus de l intégration européenne au-delà des frontières disciplinaires et d acquérir une connaissance approfondie de certaines de ses aspects. In addition, the location of the (Warsaw) campus in a new Member State of the European Union, close to its Eastern border, allows students to become familiar with the political and socioeconomic developments of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as with the EU s new European Neighbourhood Policy following enlargement. To this end, a study trip is organised to the region. During the first semester, students familiarise themselves with the political, economic, legal and historical foundation of European integration in an intense programme. With this background, students then deepen their knowledge in the second semester while specialising in a particular area by taking courses in one of the four thematic majors offered, all of which also have a pluridisciplinary character: Governance in the EU; Single market; the EU as a regional actor; and the EU as a global actor. 14 European Interdisciplinary Studies Etudes européennes interdisciplinaires This postgraduate programme is aimed at students with an academic background in a wide range of disciplines, such as law, economics, political or social sciences, history, philosophy, geography, linguistics or journalism, and who are interested in approaching the process of European integration from a broad and multidisciplinary perspective. The academic programme and its professional dimension prepare graduates to enter the European, international and national public sectors as well as the non-governmental and private sectors and may also serve as a stepping stone towards doctoral studies. Study trips In order to provide students with a fi rst-hand perspective of the European Neighbourhood Policy and to leave them with further impressions of Central and Eastern Europe, a study trip to a neighbouring country is organised during the fi rst semester. This trip explores political, economic, historical and cultural developments in the region. The study trip is preceded by pre-departure activities, including conferences and readings about the region. In the second semester, students will either visit the European institutions in Brussels and Luxembourg, as well as the Bruges campus, or participate in a further Central and Eastern European regional study trip, depending on the choice of major. The study trips are an integral part of the academic programme. Conferences Throughout the year, a series of conferences deal with current European and international affairs. 19 EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies Etudes en relations internationales et diplomatiques de l Union européenne The EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies Programme in Bruges provides specifi c knowledge of the European Union as an actor in the international environment, as well as skills in international negotiation and diplomacy. The programme thus aims at a comprehensive understanding of the EU s external relations, bringing together an interdisciplinary analysis of its internal decision-making processes, with developments in the broader context of international relations and diplomacy. Successful applicants come primarily from an academic background in political science, European studies, international relations, law, economics or history or are seconded from international organisations and national foreign services. The academic programme and its professional dimension prepare graduates to enter the European, international and national public sectors as well as the non-governmental and private sectors and may serve as a stepping stone towards doctoral studies. During the first semester, students follow several compulsory courses in order to provide them with a broad knowledge of diplomacy and European external affairs. During the second semester, participants choose four optional courses that explore selected topics from the areas of security and justice, foreign economic relations, bi- and multilateral diplomacy or professional skills in greater detail. The programme also includes a year-long compulsory language course. Students are required to write a Master s thesis in the framework of one of their optional courses. In March, students spend two weeks on the (Warsaw) campus where they participate in an interactive simulation game and an intensive course on the European Neighbourhood Policy. Le programme d études en relations internationales et diplomatiques de l Union européenne à Bruges porte spécifi quement sur l Union européenne en tant qu acteur sur la scène internationale, sur les négociations internationales et la diplomatie. Ce programme vise à donner une compréhension approfondie des relations extérieures de l Union européenne en associant une approche interdisciplinaire des modes de prise de décision interne et une analyse plus large du contexte international et diplomatique. Les candidats admis à ce programme ont principalement une formation académique en science politique, études européennes, relations internationales, droit, économie ou histoire, ou sont détachés d une organisation internationale ou d un ministère des affaires étrangères national. Le programme académique et sa dimension professionnelle préparent à des emplois dans les administrations internationales, européennes ou nationales, les organisations non-gouvernementales, le secteur privé ou à entreprendre ultérieurement un doctorat. Au cours du premier semestre, les étudiants suivent plusieurs cours obligatoires, qui visent à leur donner une connaissance large de la diplomatie et des affaires extérieures européennes. Au cours du deuxième semestre, les participants choisissent quatre cours à option où ils approfondissent certaines questions dans les domaines respectifs de la sécurité et de la justice, des relations économiques extérieures, de la diplomatie bilatérale et multilatérale ou de la formation professionnelle. Le programme inclut également un cours de langue obligatoire qui dure tout au long de l année académique. Les étudiants doivent rédiger un mémoire dans le cadre de l un de leurs cours à option. En mars, les étudiants passent deux semaines au campus de (Varsovie) où ils participent à un jeu de simulation interactif et un cours intensif sur la politique de voisinage de l Union européenne. Students may be admitted with an elementary level of French provided they follow an intensive French course in the summer before entering the College and a French course throughout the academic year. A CEF level of B1 in French must then be achieved to graduate. Those with a B1 level of French at the start of the academic year choose among beginners level Arabic, Chinese, German, Russian and Spanish.
