1 MFL newsletter Spring 2011 Dr Challoner s High School Language Matters Year 10 French Exchange Edited by Eleanor Kershaw-Green and Sarah McKay (Year 12) I am delighted that so many students once again chose to take part in this year s Year 10 French Exchange to Paris. The students from Le Collège du Sacré-Coeur, Versailles, spent a lovely week here and their teachers and parents were so grateful for the warm welcome they received. My thanks to Ms. Donnelly, Mrs. McFadyen, Mrs. Doyle, Mrs. Callaghan and Ms. Shah for accompanying the return trip to Paris. The girls made the most of their sunny week and the progress they have made in French is considerable! Mrs. Jones Inside: Interviews with the languages assistants, super work and much more!

2 Language Leaders The leaders have continued to be busy with their visits to the primary schools and recently a group visited Mrs Lewis at Chalfont St Peter to teach Spanish to the younger years it was lovely to see Mrs Lewis again and a good time was had by all. A group also went to Little Chalfont primary school whose French teacher is a former Challoner s girl- their visit brought back a few memories of her time at Challoner s! They have also been involved in Spanish and French lessons doing oral assessments as well as mentoring pupils who benefit from one to one help - all good experience for budding teachers of the future! On the horizon are visits to Bell Lane to do Easter egg hunts and fun Easter activities. In the summer term Bastille Day celebrations are getting underway so watch this space... Angela Callaghan Year 11 French Year 11 are working on the last unit of GCSE topics, which in French is "L'Environnement". The core vocabulary brings in challenging themes, which also lead on naturally into Sixth Form work, including famine and poverty. Mrs. McFadyen's group researched organisations related to these themes, Les Restos du Coeur, Les Enfants de la Terre, Médecins sans Frontières, and the French equivalent of Mother Teresa, Soeur Emmanuelle. They produced very informative Powerpoints, vocabulary sheets and oral presentations to share with their classmates. Their confidence gained in delivering these presentations will certainly support their final Controlled Speaking Test. One group even found the French song which is the theme tune for "Restos du Coeur" and copied it onto a CD; we were able to use it in class with the lyrics, as a gap-fill exercise! 4 Year 9 French Healthy Eating! Year 9 have covered a unit of work on healthy living this Term in French, including role-plays about giving advice and learning how to describe incidents and accidents! Our target was to use phrases meaning "you should" or "one must" together with a range of new vocabulary to provide lifestyle advice. Here is a poster we produced to demonstrate what we'd learned. 5 Year 12 French Exchange On Saturday 19th February, 15 sixth formers left for Avignon to visit their French exchange partners as part of the away leg of the French exchange trip. The group travelled by plane to Marignane Airport in Marseille, where they were greeted by their French families, who they would be spending the next four days with. The first full day in France was spent getting to know the families, and many girls were treated to outings and meals out at places such as Villeneuve. The next day was spent at the lycée, where the French girls were studying for their Baccalaureate. In the morning there was a tour of the school, where their English teacher explained a few things about the French education system and also about the school itself, and then in the afternoon the English girls accompanied their French partners to lessons, which was a very unique and interesting opportunity. Over the next few days the girls went on lots of exciting trips, visiting places such as the Pont du Gard, the Palais des Papes and the Arènes de Nimes. The French partners were able to go on some of the trips as well, which meant there were lots of opportunities for the girls to practice their French, especially on the bus journey where they sat with different French partners each time! Everyone was also asked to write a diary in French throughout the trip, which was a really useful way of reflecting on the day s experiences. All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable visit, and many girls were amazed at just how well their French had improved. Sarah Conboy, Year 12

6 Year 9 German Some of the Year 9 German pupils have been using a German magazine Girlfriends as a basis for their work, covering such areas as describing people and clothes. Having sent a letter off to the magazine to say how much they had enjoyed reading it, they were delighted to see their letter in print. Well done to the Year 9s!

7 Year 11 German Exchange Last December, 20 of us studying German for GCSE had a wonderful opportunity to visit Dinslaken for an exchange. We had many fun day trips including the Essen Christmas market, seeing the Cathedral and Olympic museum in Cologne and finally the Steel works museum. The best part of the trip for us was the chance we had to spend time with our exchange partners gaining cultural knowledge and seeing the different lives they lead. It was exciting for them as well as for us, as we were the first ever German exchange to the school so we even had a picture in their newspaper! The trip didn't come without its bumps and bruises; one trip to the hospital later and a lost purse before we all reached home safe and sound. However overall, the trip was an enthralling experience and we cannot wait until our partners come to visit us! We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers as well (Frau Carr and Frau Coles) for making the trip one of the best ever! Inayat Batra and Keira Hassim A-Level German Trip In March, the German A-Level class enjoyed a packed weekend away to Frau Carr s hometown of Celle, in north Germany. We spent two days there, where we visited the nearby city of Hanover and went to the cinema, went to the local museum and visited the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, which, though unpleasant, proved extremely interesting, especially as it connected with the book we are studying for our exam. We flew back in time for period 2 the next morning, having had a great weekend, enjoying the pretty buildings of Celle, surprising ourselves with the amount of German we were able to speak and understand, and even managing to sing at most available opportunities, which Frau Carr clearly loved!

8 Our Foreign Language Assistants We are extremely lucky here at DCHS to have Foreign Language Assistants for French, German and Spanish. Here are some interviews with them so that you can find out more about them and what they do here. INTERVIEW WITH OUR FRENCH ASSISTANT What's your name? Katarzyna Where were you born? In Warsaw but I moved to France when I was 3 years old. How does Challoner's compare to your secondary school? My school was mixed so this is very different. We have 2 stages of secondary schools, first le collège and then le lycée. For A Levels we study lots of different subjects, maybe 7 or 8. Our school days are much longer, from 8am to 5.30 pm but we have longer holidays. In the summer we are free from June until September. Here in England there are a lot more activities in school, for example, theatre and music. The teachers are more available for pupils. Lessons are much more interactive here and the teachers are very inventive. There are more facilities such as interactive whiteboards. We don t have those in French schools. What was your impression of English food and weather? It s good here because you can get from food from everywhere. I really like English breakfast but sometimes I find English food quite fatty. The weather here is much colder and rainier. Why did you decide to come here? I wanted to improve my English in order to help my teaching career. How long are you staying here? I'm staying from October until May. What do you plan to do when you get back to France? I'm going to study for 2 more years and try to be a teacher of English. Would you like to come back to England? I definitely want to come back again. I d like to live in England for a while. Finally what did you think of the English people The people here are lovely. They are really willing to help. 9 INTERVIEW WITH OUR SPANISH ASSISTANT What's your name and where do you come from? Flor Prieto. I come from Colombia and I live in Bogota, the capital. How does Challoner s compare to your secondary school? Schools in Colombia are quite different. There are no years 12 and 13. In Colombia students go to university at the age of 16 or 17. They have to take an exam to go to a government-funded, state university. In state schools there are very few resources and you have to work with whatever you can get. Most schools have a uniform. The length of the school day varies. In a private school the day lasts from 6.30am to 3.30 pm. In government-funded state schools the day lasts either from 6.30am to 12.30pm or from 12.30pm to 6.30pm. The school holidays are 1 week for Holy Week just before Easter, 2 weeks in June and 4 weeks in December-January. What was your impression of English food and weather? Here in England there are lots of convenience foods and not so much fresh food. In Colombia it s the other way round. English weather is much colder than in Colombia. At home we have all kinds of weather: some areas are cold and others are hot. We don t have proper seasons like here in England. In Bogota, for example, it never gets colder than about 17 degrees. What are your impressions of England? It is very rich in culture and you are always aware of the contrast between the past and the present. Why did you decide to come here? I wanted to improve my English and I wanted to work in a real context to learn about schools here and to see the education system in practice. How do you find the English language? It is quite easy but it takes a long time to learn how to speak it in a natural way. When you learn a language at university it is very formal and in a natural context it is very different. How long are you staying here? I'm staying from October until May. Have you been to London? Yes, I have been to the Natural History Museum which is very interesting. There are ancient remains of prehistoric animals, dinosaurs, which you don t see in Colombia. I ve also been to London Bridge and to other places. Where are you going at Easter? I want to visit Scotland. What do you plan to do when you get back to? I hope to go back to my job at one of the universities where I teach English. Finally what did you think of the English people? They are very kind, but also reserved. But I have not met so many English people Holly Jackson, Maria Caryana and Libby Askew 8 N

10 INTERVIEW WITH OUR GERMAN ASSISTANT What's your name? Christine Where were you born? Bad Mergenbein (in the south of Germany) How does Challoner's compare to your secondary school? I went to a mixed school, but I was impressed by all of the activities and after school clubs What was your impression of English food and weather? The English food didn't really appeal to me, and it was quite fatty in the restaurants. The weather wasn't very nice and it was too unpredictable for my liking. Why did you decide to come here? I wanted to improve my English and help my teaching career. How long are you staying here? I'm staying from October until May. What do you plan to do when you get back to Germany? I'm going to study for 3 more years and try to be a teacher in French, German and English. Would you like to come back to England? Yes definitely. I love all the different places and monuments. Finally what did you think of the English people? They were polite and nice but in Germany when we are talking we get straight to the point whereas English people often don t. 11 Year 9 French fairy tales, French poetry and selfportraits Year 9 French pupils have been using the imperfect tense to write some beautiful fairy tales, fantastic poems and intriguing self-portraits. Mrs McFadyen & Miss Donnelly A Fairytale in French (Conte de Fées) Il était une fois il y avait une princesse, un prince et son beau cheval et ils vivaient dans un royaume loin, loin d ici. Dans le château ils serviront à planifier leur mariage, avec le cheval qui parlait. Aussi, la princesse avait une passion- elle aimait à chanter. Ce pendant, il y avait un problème : il y avait une méchante sorcière qui vivait a la lisière du bois (toute seule), elle tombait amoureuse du prince. Mais le prince était en amour avec la princesse et il planifiait d'épouser la princesse. La sorcière était très triste parce que le prince l a rejeté. Donc, elle a décidé que si elle ne pouvait pas avoir le prince, alors personne ne pourrait. Elle commençait à élaborer un plan pour ruiner le jour du mariage. Ecoutez, mon mal nain. La sorcière a dit. Le petit nain a tombé en amoureux de sorcière parce qu elle jetait un sort en le nain, donc malheureusement par le petit gars, lui devait servir la sorcière. Oui, madame?, puis la sorcière a commencé expliquer le plan elle concevait. Elle allait enlever le prince juste avant le mariage royal. Le nain pensait que le plan était parfait et il ne pouvait pas attendre pour aider son amour. Après la méchante sorcière a essayé une série de tours de souplesse, qui avait échoué, elle était exaspérée! Puis, soudain, elle a une idée stupéfiante! Elle a commencé à préparer. Le lendemain la méchante sorcière partait très vite pour le château, ou elle à tente la belle princesse dans la forêt. Puis elle a jeté un sort sur la princesse. Pourtant, la sorcière avait la malchance et malheureusement pour elle le charme a pétardé au sorcier! Elle transitait dans une mauvaise herbe! La Princesse était très heureuse, car le sorcier était mort. Tout allait bien dans le royaume. Quand la sorcière a disparu, tout le monde était vraiment heureux! Le prince et la princesse ont été réunis et se sont mariés. Le mariage a été beau, surtout le gâteau! Ils vivaient heureux pour toujours!

12 Il était une fois dans un palais un petit garçon qui s appelait Cédric Bonne. Cédric était un prince, et il avait tout. Il avait des licornes qui s appelle Neige et Nuit, il avait un sorcier s'appelait Merlin, il avait son papa, le roi, et son mère, la reine. Aussi il avait une sœur a s'appelle sleeping beauty mais elle était fatiguée tout le temps car elle avait dormi pendant cent ans! Sleeping Beauty avait trois fée mais elles étaient méchantes et ont toujours pris ses vêtements. Dans le palais, il y avait beaucoup de chambres mais elles étaient toutes grandes et sombres alors il passait la plupart de son temps dans le jardin avec Diddy. Dans le jardin il y avait beaucoup d'animaux magiques, mais ils étaient timides et se cacha derrière les arbres. Les oiseaux n'ont cependant pas été timide et utilisé pour taquiner Diddy. La sœur de Cédric, Sleeping Beauty, aimait chanter et allait souvent au bois à chanter avec les oiseaux mais Cédric n'aimait pas les oiseaux ou le chant alors qu'il évitait les bois. Pauvre Cédric et Diddy, ils n'avaient pas où aller, ils n'avaient pas d'amis, ils étaient tous seuls. Si par une nuit sombre, ils s'en allaient, sur leur cheval blanc, de trouver un endroit ou ils pouvaient appartenir. *** Prince Cédric est allé plus loin dans les bois. Sur son cheval et noir grand, il est allé aussi vite qu il le pouvait avec Diddy dans sa poche. Il a vu des oiseaux bleus qui voilaient haut dans le ciel et les citrouilles orange vif et il pouvait entendre le rire des géants dans la forêt profonde. Il avait attaint la fin de la forêt et se trouvait près d une rivière avec beaucoup de belles fleurs. Le prince espérait qu il avait trouvé un nouveau royaume où il pourrait vivre, mais il ne savait pas ce qu est un lieu maudit où il entrait. Diddy comme d habitude avait dormi et s est réveillé, il était très fatigue. Il pensait quel endroit merveilleux cela pourrait être de vivre, il se demande si d autres nains vivaient dans le lointain. Ils marchaient vers la tour où ils ont entendu la chanson. Alors qu ils marchaient la chant obtenu plus fort et a été trop fort pour le petit Diddy! Donc, il s est effondré! Mais, le prince a ignore Diddy comme il a pensé qu il était endormi. Le prince est arrive à la vieille tour, il voulait voir qui a eu la belle voix. Malheureusement il y avait une longue file de gens par la tour, donc, le beau prince attendait. Il faisait nuit, et Cédric dormi sur le sol et rêvait de la princesse. Cédric a été réveillé par Diddy en sautant sur lui. Réveillez, Cédric, réveillez maintenant! dit Diddy. C est moi, moi Shrek! Dit Shrek Ah Shrek, comme ça va? Dit Cédric Pas trop bonne, moi et Fiona ont divorcé Eh bien, elle n a jamais vraiment vous avez aimé Mmm, je crois que je vais épouser le grand méchant loup match parfait Je sais, Je dois quitter pour lui proposer, au revoir Cédric! Le prince était maintenant à l avant il pouvait parler à la princesse. Rapunzel, Rapunzel laisser tomber vos cheveux! La belle jeune fille laissait tomber ses cheveux d or. Le prince se mettait à monter ses cheveux! Mais tout à coup avant que le prince est arrive au haut de la tour, il lui a tire les cheveux et est tombé au sol. Tu as déchiré mes extensions de cheveux criait Rapunzel Vous avez les cheveux faux S il vous plaît pardonnez moi, je t aime. Ne jamais. Je tu maudis! Vous sale, laid, Prince. Vous ne trouverez jamais un autre royaume. Je suis une sorcière, oui. Tout ce que je voulais, c était d être comme tout le monde, je vous bannir de ce pays! Je prédis l avenir, et vous souffrirez. Il est devenu noir et il a commencé à pleuvoir. Diddy a sauté dans la poche de Cédric et ils sont partis pour trouver un autre royaume.

13 Quand il a marchait dans le forêt avec son cheval et Diddy, il a vu une petite maison. Il doit avoir une fille belle, car le maison est très propre. Il a pensé. Il a ouvert la grande porte bleue avec beaucoup de fleurs. Bonjour?! criait il dans la petite maison vide. Après une minute, il est entré et il a abandonné Diddy avec les fleurs jolies. Il regardait dans la salle quand il a vu trois bols de porridge sur la table. Je pourrais rester ici en peut. Il a dit tranquillement, car il a très faim. Soudain, quand il approchait aux bols de porridge grand, il a entendu un bruit! Une fille a entré, et une fille belle elle était! Il a regardé en surprise à la fille avec ses cheveux blonds et les yeux bleus et belles. Elle a vu Cédric et elle a crié "Qui es tu?!" Il a répondu, "Je suis Cédric! Un prince! Je cherche une fille belle, un princesse pour moi!" Après, elle a dit "Je m appelle Boucle d or, je cherche un lit et un repas." Elle a pris le bol de porridge grand, mais quand elle mangeait, elle a dit "Eugh, non, beaucoup de sel." Elle approchait le deuxième bol quand Cédric a dit "Embrassez moi." Elle a regarde Cédric avec confusion. "Pourquoi?" Quand soudain, ils ont entendu un bruit! Boucle D or a crié, et un moment après trois ours ont entrés. L ours grand était et il a crié «Partez! Partez immédiatement!" Cédric a voulu courir et il a pris la main de Boucle D ors et ils ont connu! Mais quand ils couraient les ours ont chassent. Malheureusement, Cédric a entré en collision avec son cheval et Diddy! Boucle D ors a couru dans le forêt. Il était sur le terrain quand il a dit, "Ce n est pas mon conte " *** Comme se promenaient sur le chemin à travers les bois, la lumière a commencé à s estomper, et Cédric sentait encore plus perdu., et après avoir échoué à sauver Rapunzel et poursuivi par trois ours il sentait encore plus comme il n appartenait pas. Où allons nous partir d ici Diddy? N importe où, aussi longtemps que je peux assis dans un fauteuil confortable et je peux porte des pantoufles Diddy a commencé à rêver jour. Sérieux Diddy, où? Honnêtement, je ne sais pas, mais je sais j ai besoin à dormir. La soir, comme Diddy a commencé à ronfler, Cédric pensait des autres Princes, et de la fin joyeuse de leurs histoires, en particulier le Prince Charmant, il reçoit toujours une fin heureuse. Ses pensées étaient perturbées par bruissement dans le bois, et le son des chants. Tout d un coup sept Diddy s marchaient à travers la clairière. Cédric a décidé à suite les. Il les a suivi à un petit chalet près de la rivière, la plus belle fille était debout l extérieur. Sa peau était blanche comme neige, et ses cheveux était noir comme la nuit. C était le coup de foudre. Cédric marchait vers elle, elle a tourné. Ummm, bonjour je m appelle Snow White, et toi?» «Je m appelle Cédric Bonne» «Peux je vous aider, Cédric?» «Oui, je pense que j ai trouvé où j appartenions» «Je le pense aussi» Cédric a couru et il la pris dans ses bras puis il a baisé elle. Donc, voilà! Dans un petit chalet près de la rivière avec Diddy dans un fauteuil confortable, il portait des pantoufles, et Cédric amoureux. Ils avaient trouvé quelque part d appartenir. 19 Year 9 Spanish Daily Routine Year 9 Spanish pupils have covered a unit of work describing a daily routine. Here are some examples that were particularly creative. Miss Devaux Mi rutina diaria Normalmente, me despierto a las nueve. Me levanto a las nueve y media, y normalmente, estoy cansado. Vivo en la luna, entonces, la vida aquí es muy diferente de la vida en Inglaterra. Después, tomo un café con mis amigas, los extraterrestres, en la cocina. Pienso que ellos son graciosos. Ellos son gordos y azules, pero aparte de eso, ellos son normales! Luego, me ducho en el cuarto de baño, pero no es normal No hay agua, sino chocolate. Desayuno a las diez. Como cereales del espacio y bebo un chocolate caliente. Personalmente, pienso que es genial, porque en Inglaterra, no hay cereales espaciales. Entonces, me lavo los dientes. Entonces, vamos a la playa de las melcochas donde tomamos el sol y nos bañamos en el mar. Creo que eso vale la pena, porque la vista es increíble: se puede ver la Tierra. También, puedo comer el queso del espacio. Generalmente, no me gusta el queso, pero éste es delicioso! No es de extrañar que los extraterrestres sean gordos! A las doce, voy al colegio con los extraterrestres. Me gusta, porque en Inglaterra se debe ir al colegio a las ocho y media! Estudio en el colegio durante cinco horas. Es diferente porque estudiamos asignaturas diferentes. Por ejemplo, no estudio la geografía sino la Magia. Desde mi punto de vista es más divertida que la geografía. El colegio es increíble! Normalmente vuelvo a casa a las cinco pero a veces tengo un club de deporte. Lo malo es que no hay tantos clubs como en Inglaterra. También no puedo jugar al tenis o al netball porque la gravedad es un problema. Pero, es divertido porque puedo saltar muy alto! Ceno con mis nuevos amigos que se llaman Sol y Thor. Personalmente, creo que los nombres son insólitos. Voy a la cama a las diez de la noche. No hay sol, así que es difícil saber qué hora es. Es la noche todo el tiempo! En mi opinión no es bueno. Sueño toda la noche!

20 Mi Rutina Diaria By Sophie Bacon A las cuatro de la mañana, me despierto con el canto de un gallo. El es mi mejor amigo, pero es muy gordo! A las cuatro y media, tomo el desayuno en el jardín con mis otros amigos, las babosas. Son muy agradables y hablan mucho! Todas las mañanas tomo un baño con mis mascotas los patos. Les gusta que juegue con ellos, lo que no es muy gracioso. Luego, veo la televisión durante cuatro horas ahora tengo los ojos cuadrados! A las nueve de la mañana, voy al colegio. Estoy celosa de mi perro porque él no tiene que ir a la escuela! En mis clases, me siento al lado de un vampiro. Es muy aterrador pero creo que estoy enamorada de ello! Por la tarde, regreso a casa. Voy a mi dormitorio y acaricio mis caracoles. Todos los días tengo que desordenar mi dormitorio porque es siempre muy ordenado. Por la noche, tomo una cena con los zombis que viven al lado de mi casa. Nos llevamos bien y jugamos al fútbol en el jardín. Finalmente, me acuesto en mi ataúd en la bodega. Me gusta porque es muy aislado y relajante. Mi Rutina Hola! Me llamo Amy y soy un bebé. Tengo cinco meses y tengo una hermana que se llama Mia. Vivimos con nuestro padre y nuestra madre y me llevo bien con todos, a pesar de que yo les despierta. Nuestra casa está en las afueras de Londres, situada en el sureste de Inglaterra. Cada día, me levanto a las siete y media porque mi hermana debe ir a la escuela (mi padre se levanta muy temprano y va a su trabajo a las siete menos cuarto). Entonces me visto rápidamente de hecho, mi madre me viste rápidamente. Después desayuno con mi hermana, que me da de comer puré de guisantes. Me encantan los guisantes ya que son mi comida favorita! Luego, mi hermana va al colegio, pero mi madre la lleva a la escuela así que como consecuencia no estoy autorizada a quedarme sola en casa. Para ser te sincera, la escuela está muy cerca de nuestra casa y creo que mi hermana es un poco perezosa. Por qué no puede ir a la escuela a pie? Supongo que es bastante malo. Por la mañana a mi madre y a yo nos gusta jugar, pero jugamos con un juego diferente cada día. Por ejemplo, los lunes, hacemos un rompecabezas mientras que los martes, nosotros pintamos con los dedos. Después, sobre mediodía, me acuesto para mi siesta. Mi madre me despierta a la una de la tarde para el almuerzo. Sin embargo, esto me hace triste y usualmente yo lloro. Cuando yo dejo de llorar, mi madre me da de comer zanahorias blandas- Ellas son repugnantes!

21 A las tres y veinte, tengo que ir con mi madre a la escuela para recoger a Mia. A las cinco y media, yo ayudo a mi madre a preparar la comida mientras que mi hermana hace sus deberes en su dormitorio. Mi padre vuelve a casa sobre las siete menos veinticinco y por la noche, generalmente cenamos juntos a eso de las siete y a menudo comemos comida casera a menos de que sea una ocasión especial y en este caso comemos en un restaurante. Me baño (pero no me gusta nada y el agua me da miedo así que me hace llorar) en el cuarto de baño y mi hermana se lava y se lava los dientes. Finalmente me acuesto y mi padre me pone en mi cuna. Sin embargo, durante la noche, me despierto muchas veces. Normalmente me despierto cinco veces y casi siempre mi madre tiene que cantar para mí hasta que caiga dormida. Me llamo Katherine y tengo trece a-ños. Yo vivo debajo del mar en el medio del Océano Pacífico con mis padres, mis dos hermanos y mi perro. Nosotros vivimos en una burbuja grande. Está cerca de Hawái y el agua está muy caliente porque está cerca del ecuador. Todos los días me despierto a las siete en punto. Primero, me baño en el mar y nado con los peces. Cuando estamos en el agua tenemos que tener mucho cuidado a causa de los tiburones. A las siete y media desayuno, y me cepillo los dientes. Después, a las ocho, me visto: me pongo un traje de buzo, y mi madre nos lleva a mis hermanos y a yo al instituto a tortuga. Las clases empiezan a las ocho y media. Mi asignatura favorita es la natación porque es muy divertida y me llevo bien con el profesor. Vuelvo a casa a las tres y cuarto. Por la tarde, normalmente, cenamos sopa de algas pero nunca comemos pescado. A veces cenamos carne de Hawái, pero sólo para los cumpleaños o la Navidad. A las cuatro hago mis deberes y después me relajo. Me acuesto a las diez menos cuarto de la noche.

22 Year 12 Italian Congratulations to the following Year 12 girls who have taken Italian in their Complementary Studies this year, and been awarded Italian Level 3 Breakthrough Asset Languages certificates: Helen Bychawski Charlotte Montaut Sophie Hill Jessica Barrow Sophie Tanno Molly Kempner Hannah Watts Ella Wills Olivia Knoester Katherine Grundy Florence Allday, not forgetting Rachel Kee and Jennie Dziegiel who graced us with their presence this year, having achieved the certification last year! Signora Foster. Japanese: In Japanese this term the girls have started learning the third and final script used in reading and writing the language katakana. They are now able to use all three scripts appropriately in their written work, just as a Japanese person would! In lessons we have been looking at how to describe what you typically do every day, and likes and dislikes, with a particular focus on food and meals. Below is an example of a written piece describing eating habits and food preferences. We have talked about traditional Japanese dishes and, as a bit of cultural exploration to develop on what we were learning in lessons, we had a Japanese food tasting session before Christmas. The girls enjoyed a selection of authentic Japanese snacks, as well as some delicious sushi, made by Amy Smith, and cakes decorated in kanji, made by Sasha Warren. To get themselves in the Christmas spirit, the girls also made some very impressive pieces of festive origami! More recently our thoughts have turned towards the terrible events that have been taking place in Japan; the earthquake, tsunami and their consequences for the people of Japan. The girls were keen to use their interest in Japanese culture to help raise money for the victims of the earthquake, and made some really excellent origami and Japanese zodiac name cards to be sold as part of a fundraising event.
